CBT TRAINING

Element A

Element A is the first part of the CBT (Compulsory Basic Training) test. We cover making suitable decisions about equipment and clothing, including the legal requirement to wear an approved safety helmet when riding a moped or motorcycle on the road.

Your licence and eyesight will also be checked. The instructor will explain the goals of the course.

It's important to bring any glasses or contact lenses that you use, as you will be required to read a licence plate from a distance of 20 meters.

We will also cover

  • Understanding the legal requirements to ride on the road
  • Reinforcing your understanding of the Highway Code to a good level
  • The objectives of completing the CBT test
  • The importance of using good motorcycle equipment and clothing

Element B

Element B is an introduction to the bike, its controls and includes

  • How to use the motorcycle stands to park your bike safely
  • Familiarity with the different controls on a motorcycle or scooter
  • The ability to wheel the bike around to the left and right
  • How to start and stop the engine
  • Performing basic maintenance checks on the motorcycle

Element C

During the third element (Element C) of the CBT (Compulsory Basic Training) test, you will have the opportunity to practice your riding skills on an approved training site (also known as a CBT pad). This is the main part of the course, and you will learn how to:

  • Pull away, stop, start, and change gears (if applicable)
  • Ride in a straight line
  • Ride at a slow and controlled speed
  • Change gears
  • Use both brakes effectively
  • Ride a figure of eight
  • Make left, right, and U-turns
  • Perform emergency braking
  • Safely ride around bends
  • Perform rear observation to check for other vehicles and pedestrians

Element D

During Element D of the CBT (Compulsory Basic Training) test, you will return to the classroom for a final briefing before going out on the road.

During this briefing, you will receive information on:

  • The appropriate use of speed, road positioning, and safe driving distances
  • The importance of following the Highway Code
  • Increasing your visibility on the road
  • Proper use of rear observation
  • Riding at the correct speeds, maintaining proper road positioning, and keeping an appropriate distance from other vehicles according to traffic and road conditions
  • Anticipating dangers and practising defensive driving techniques
  • How to use radios and avoid getting lost while on the road

Element E

During Element E of the CBT (Compulsory Basic Training) test, you will have the opportunity to put all of the skills you have learned into practice by doing some actual on-road riding. You will go out on the road with an instructor, using a radio link to communicate. At the beginning of this element, the instructor will provide plenty of guidance and help. However, as you progress, the instructor will be looking to see if you can safely navigate from one place to another without causing harm to yourself or others. You must complete at least two hours of road tuition, including performing a U-turn and an emergency stop.
